As those of you who read our blogs will know, I hate having my time wasted. For many years, I was the biggest waster of my own time as I have no sense of direction, and I used to have to allow an extra half hour to get anywhere. This is not because I was unclear about my destination; I knew exactly where I had to go.
I am fascinated by why individuals do and don’t use their time effectively and why certain individuals embark on behaviour that will cause them the opposite of what they would like to achieve. There are some individuals who unconsciously, but nonetheless actively, sabotage their efforts.
The psychology of human behaviour in its many forms, whether psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, or using psychometrics, or coaching mechanisms in the workplace, are all incredibly useful areas of discovery in which to find out more about behaviour and indeed, therefore, about the use of time.
If businesses are going to be efficient, then we only have our expertise, our time and our health at our disposal. In my view, health must come at the top as we have nothing if we do not have health. Therefore, it seems to me that health and the way we use our energy and time must come top of the agenda.
I was particularly taken by this TED video:
I am not late anymore because I always use some sort of guide to take me to my destination. I thought the motivation behind ‘what3words’ was delightfully simple and so incredibly effective. As a pianist, it also pleased me that this came indirectly from the music industry. I hope you enjoy this clip as much as I did. Not everybody is using this particular method, but if you want to save time and you are geographically challenged, then you might find it useful.
When it comes to geography, knowing your destination is, of course, the first necessity in planning a route somewhere, but if we extend the idea more metaphorically then we arrive at my favourite Stephen Covey habit - know your outcome. Knowing your outcome is an incredibly powerful mechanism also for managing time. If you don’t know why you are doing something, then it is worth thinking about what the payback might be and making good decisions on managing what you are doing at any particular time.
