The famous phrase, “when the US sneezes, the world catches a cold”, was a remark made by the then Austrian Chancellor, Metternich. Although far removed from that time, now in the 21st century, it is still as applicable as ever - And, when it comes to HR policies, this quote is very apt when thinking of the realm of DEI.
While Donald Trump's changing policies do not have legal jurisdiction in the UK, many companies take their ideas from their American counterparts. Notably, critics of DEI in the UK, are likely to consider rowing back their own policies where there may be leeway. As a result, those business leaders who are strong advocates of DEI will need to strengthen their resolve in relation to inclusive recruitment practices and legal frameworks and policies.
Indeed, recent changes to the Employment Rights Bill will help to support this effort. Further, small, clear actions to support those with protected characteristics will help make it clear for corporations and those working in them, that there is still a need for consistent effort to bolster DEI policy, strategy, and procedures.
Indeed, it is important to remember that not only is the approach to DEI a way to ensure that everyone within the workplace is treated equally and given equal opportunity, but also a means by which to recruit the best employees and make the most enjoyable work environment, thereby making employees happier and thus more productive, and consequently the company more profitable.
