I was at HIIT training the other day and a very anxious mother asked me if I could help her son get a job. It transpires that he is failing to get interviews after many months of frequent applications for a role in HR. Many things came to mind. The first is that when one coaches people for a job interview, it isn’t necessarily a job in HR. Our role as a coach is to help the recruitment process from a candidate point of view and enable success to take place more quickly in terms of matching for the right job and being successful through the recruitment and selection process.

This particular individual had been unable to secure interviews, and my aim over two focused sessions is to identify the reasons behind this, strengthen his application materials to support better choices and outcomes, and ensure he is fully prepared to perform at his best during the interview. The result is that he will come out of the interview knowing that he couldn’t have done better in terms of answering the questions asked.

It is interesting that youngsters who have not followed a traditional path are often slipped through the careers guidance process either at school or at university and do not realise what help is available to help them achieve their goals. Likewise, they have difficulty defining their goals, accessing their desire and then knowing how to implement the desire they have accessed.

We are increasingly working with the children of clients we successfully supported years ago, as effective job hunting and coaching techniques depend less on age and more on current market conditions.
